MELANIN DRIP REVIEW

Bad Gyal Situa, signed to Eminence Africa, drops her debut single, Melanin Drip. Produced by Lamzo Jay, the track takes your ears and your body on a musical journey you’re not soon to forget.

The beat is reminiscent of the old cool slow reggae that used to and still can be heard on Thursday nights at some clubs. The faux-Jamaican accent is a bit off-putting at first, with the mix of Krio and Carribean tones, but it gradually blends into a perfect mix of two similar yet foreign cultures.

The bridge and chorus isn’t the catchiest or sing-along friendly. What it is, however, is something you can easily turn on at any time, whether you wanna slow down the tempo at a party, want something to listen to while you go about your day or just dance and chill with your mates after a long week. I know for sure DJ's will love the addition of this track into their club mixes.

The transitions from the verses into the chorus is so subtle you don’t even notice it. The beat drops effortlessly, especially for the third verse, which is my personal favourite, makes it a joy for repeat listens.

There are some mixing lapses, with an overuse of echo in my opinion, among other things. I do look forward to hearing the song performed live to see what changes Situa would make to make it a little more upbeat and more of a Afro-Pop bop.

For her first single, this song smashes all expectations and creates even more. It might be too early to say, but let me be the first to say, Bad Gyal Situa is gunning for that crown, and if it were up to me, I would gladly say her reign over SL music has begun
